Her kimono is special to her because it reminds her of her grandmother who she visited over the summer. On her first day of school she wore her blue kimono even though her sisters did not think she should wear it. The kids at school laughed at her because her clothes were different from the casual clothing young children would usually wear at school. The teacher starts off the first day by asking volunteers to share what they did over the summer. Suki shares by telling the class about the street festival she went to and shows the class how both her and her family danced in the festival. At the end of the story everyone becomes interested in her culture and learns to be accepting of it.
