Summary: Suki is a young Japanese girl who wants to wear her blue kimono on her first day of school. Her kimono is special to her because it reminds her of her grandmother who she visited over the summer. On her first day of school she wore her blue kimono even though her sisters did not think she should wear it. The kids at school laughed at her because her clothes were different from the casual clothing young children would usually wear at school. The teacher starts off the first day by asking volunteers to share what they did over the summer. Suki shares by telling the class about the street festival she went to and shows the class how both her and her family danced in the festival. At the end of the story everyone becomes interested in her culture and learns to be accepting of it.

Description: This book reveals another child's culture and how much Suki`s grandmothers kimono means to her. I chose this book because I would want my students in the classroom to know more about others different in their culture. In the book at first Suki`s classmates view her differently because of the different clothing she wears than they learn to accept this difference.

Summary: A new girl named Tanisha spills grape juice all over her new dress, one of her classmates thinks about how to make her feel better about the incident and what it means to be nice to others. Her classmate shows kindness by asking Tanisha to play and even sticks up for another classmate who was being bullied. This overall story shows good examples on how a child can be kind to others. No matter how big or small the action is can make a difference to help a friend.


Description: This is a cute little book that has great diverse images of all children this is the main reason why I chose this book. I want my students to see themselves in books and relate to the characters as well. This book also sets a great example on how we can be kind to others and treat others how you would want to be treated.

Summary: One night a young girl named Amanda Hears her parents talking about moving from Mexico to Los Angeles which is on the other side of the border. The reasoning for them to migrate is for her dad to receive a better job opportunity. Amanda keeps a dairy where she writes down her fears about moving to the United States and what she hopes for. Her main concerns are leaving her best friend behind, not being able to learn English, and if her family never returns to Mexico to visit.

Description: I wanted to branch out on other books to have in the classroom that relate to other students experiences. This will be useful for new students in my classroom who have moved from another country. Young children need to be reminded that it is ok to be nervous about moving or switching to a new school.

Description: I chose this resource because it shows educators what culturally responsive pedagogy is not and what culturally responsive pedagogy is. I like how this shows that teaching in general is not a one size fits all approach. We need to advocate for our students and meet them where they are. At the end of this webpage shows some well known authors and their work.
